As part of our studio project this year, our research begins with our own lives, looking at traces of everyday life. But how does one choose the appropriate venue or spacial environment with which we live in? What makes us consume or interact more in some space vs others. It can't be merely a practical / functional strategy. My focus has to be more than that, a place i feel safe in, psychologically well being. Somewhere that allows me all the best things my apartment can offer, and the least amount of energy expended. Am i lazy, probably a little.
The kitchen seems like the logical choice, wear and tear each day. But honestly the busier i have been with school, and work, the less time i spend in the kitchen. I hate to say it but my wife spends more time in there. Then what about the bedroom? or the bathroom? Something seems to be missing out of those options. Beside the invasion of privacy for my wife. This exercise is to critically evaluate our everyday traces, explore the motivations and values behind them. The best choice seems to be the living area. But more specifically the couch. I perceive it as a vehicle for our everyday living. Not only do i usually watch TV, or nap or sometimes sleep on it, but as a family we get together on the couch, feed baby on it, it meals at it, i do a lot of my drawing on it, or laptop/studio work at it. It seems like the best choice because i do almost everything on it and the area has the most interaction privately and publicly.
My strategy will be to document the space for trace of activity from myself and others, document and map movements, lighting changes, public activity. I can start a drawing analysis of the couch itself. I might try some pinhole photos of the space because of there ability to pick up movement and cast a different look to the space being photographed.
